Lovely Listowel

by Brian McMahon

Oh, Puck may be famous and Galway be grand,

And the praise of Tramore echo down through the land,

But I'll sing you a ballad and beauty extol,

As I found it long'go in the Town of Listowel.

I've been to Bundoran, I've rambled to Bray

I've footed it to Bantry with beautiful Bay,

But I'd barter their charms, I would 'pon me soul,

For the week of the Races in lovely Listowel.

There were Bookies and Bagmen and Bankers and all,

Biddy Mulligan was there with a green-coloured shawl,

And a cute little boy pitching pence in a bowl,

Took me down for a crown in the Town of Listowel.

Beyond on the course there was silk flashing past,

The unfortunate horse that I backed he came last,

When he ran the wrong way sure I lost my control,

And I prayed for his trainer and Lovely Listowel.

On, night time, how are you - the night sure 'twas day,

And the stars in the sky they looked down in dismay,

And they sez to the moon then in accents so droll,

"You're done, for the sun shines tonight on Listowel."

They came from Castleisland, they came from Tralee,

And a good lookin' gentleman came from Figi,

We'd a Dutchman, a German, a Swede and a Pole,

Sure 'twas more like Geneva than Lovely Listowel.

My rhyming is over, God bless those who heard,

So I'll take to the road like a migratin' bird,

But before I depart, well you all must pay toll,

So three cheers for the Races and Lovely Listowel.

Listowel Bridge (Big Bridge) which was opened in 1829, was built by Richard Griffith at a cost of £2,418, his tendering estimate was £3,000.

In a submission to the Chief Secretary on February 6th 1823, Griffith wrote, that the previous wooden bridge had in 'great part been carried away by the flood of last autumn' and 'was the only one which remained over the river Feale between the source and the sea'

WALL of Kilbaha: I came across the information below online, from Sean O Connell. Wall in Kerry Evening Post of 10 March 1860, 4 Nov. 1908. Murder of James Wall/sentencing of John Neil to hang, Jan. 1809 Special Commission. 'Mr. Wall was a respectable gentleman, residing near Newtownsandes .Freeman's Jn., 4 August 1809: 'Michael Mulvahill found guilty of the murder of James Wall and John Scanlan, to be execute on the same day' (July 29, ); executed with Michael Murphy (see Tisdall op.cit.) 'opposite the gaol'. More than four years later, the Knight of Kerry noted that Timothy Mulvihill, the principal suspect, was still at large (National Archives of Ireland, SOC 1532/22.Ballinruddery, Listowel, 30 Sept. 1813, Maurice Fitzgerald to Robert Peel); apprehension of Timothy Mulvihill reported in The Limerick General Advertiser of 31 May 1814 'at Knockanure by the spirited and judicious exertions of John Sandes, Esq ... aided by a party of the Waterford Militia'.

Imagine a slaughter of over 1,200 people in two days, almost 200 hundred of them Catholic priests. Imagine a slaughter performed by a maddened mob, a slaughter justified by the hope for a godless future where only the mind was of import. Well, this is what is commemorated on this day for the Feast of the Martyrs of September.

The age old tradition of celebrating Mass at Ballyine Mass Rock, Ardagh continued on Thursday evening last 18th August 2011. The site was developed, by voluntary labour in 1953/54 to mark the Marian Year and Mass was celebrated before 2,000 people on The Feast of The Assumption, 15th August 1954. It has been held on an annual basis since, Fr Larry Madden P.P. Ardagh/Carrigkerry celebrated the Mass

life and career of Murdo Mac Kenzie. A panel of speakers each dealt with a separate aspect of the story and the format worked extremely well. Dorothy Scott, a niece of Murdo’s, who had travelled from Forres in Scotland, gave a very informative insight into the family background and how Murdo came to Glengarriff to take up his post in 1928. She shared her memories of visiting Garinish through the years from her childhood in the 1950s and had a very interesting selection of old family snapshots from these occasions. Dan Kelleher who took over from Murdo in 1971 continued the story and told of his experiences trying to follow on from such a high standard as had been set. There then followed a panel discussion in which Do rothy and Dan Kelleher were joined by Cormac Foley who is now the Park Superintendant and by Eddie Jer O Sullivan who had begun work on Garinish as a teenager in the late 1950s.

BIG Crowds attended Listowel Races from Wednesday last till they were cancelled on Saturday. Weather though showery at times, was tolerable. Best dressed lady was won by Maria Murphy a daughter of Christy and Imelda Murphy of Bedford, last years winner was Catherine Keane and the 2009 winner was another local woman Olivia Buckley. Wrenboy night was reasonably attended, the shows were entertaining and lively, one heavy shower around 9pm, scattered everyone, but the traditional follower of the wren returned to watch some talented performances. A note of sadness this year as we remember Michael Dowling.

DAN Keane celebrated his birthday on 17th Sept. he was born in 1919. He received many birthday cards, Dan is still helping people find their ancestors.

TADGH Kennelly, introduction to his parting speech given in Australia. My football journey began the minute I could walk. I grew up in a small country town called Listowel, in Co-Kerry on the South West of Ireland where there are about 1500 people. My childhood was no different to many other children's in that I idolised my father and whatever my father did I wanted to do. The only problem was my dad had won five All Irelands (premierships) with Kerry so I had a lot to live up to. Full speech at newtownsandes.jimdo.com

William L. Vesey-Fitzgerald Foster was leasing this property from the TCD estate at the time of Griffith's Valuation, when it was valued at £3 15s. In 1837 Lewis mentions the principal residence in Murher parish as the property of Baron Fitzgerald but occupied by Mr. Enright. In 1814, Leet refers to it as the residence of John Sandes. Bary notes that it was earlier associated with the Sandes family. It is no longer extant.

Sandes was one of the principal lessors in the parish of Aghavallen, barony of Iraghticonnor, at the time of Griffith's Valuation. The Ordnance Survey Name Books noted in the 1830s that he held lands from the Trinity College estates.William Sandes held several townlands in the parishes of Kilnaughtin, Knockanure and Murher, in the same barony. In 1863,1864 and 1865, over 2000 acres of William Sandes estate was offered for sale in the Landed Estates Court. The estate of Thomas Sandes, of Sallowglen, Tarbert, amounted to over 7000 acres in the 1870s. LETTER in The Royal Society archives from Bernard O Connor to Sir Charles Walgrave , published around 1740 in Paris, giving an account of a human skeleton that looks like it had been carved from a single piece of wood , the backbone was solid without joints, only part of it was available, if the rest was similar the person would be a semi circle , the bones were found in a churchyard and appear to belong to an old man.

Another Paper by the Royal Society written in 1787 by Mr Jenner describes the Cuckoo in Glostershire from arrival about 17th April and leaving first week in July. No Cuckoo eggs could be found before middle of May. They put their eggs in nest of hedge sparrow, water wagtail, tit lark, yellow hammer, green linnet and whin chat, they generally put them in the nest of the hedge sparrow. A single cuckoo always remains the sole occupant of the nest, even two cuckoos are in a nest one throws out the other, He made several experiments and observations including putting discarded chicks back into the nest and finding that the cuckoo loses ability to dump chicks as it gets older and also found that he could hatch an egg under the young cuckoo.

While listening to a recent TV news story about the late Christopher Hitchens, I heard a Pakistani interview subject accuse Hitchens of being an unreconstructed “American apologist.” The other four or five people interviewed all heaped lavish praise on Hitchens. With all due respect to the dead, allow me to further elaborate on the views of the lone dissenter.

Hitchens died recently of cancer of the esophagus. His main claim to fame was as a writer, most recently for Vanity Fair magazine and before then for The Nation and other publications.

My criticism of Hitchens was his blind, unquestioned and totally flawed support for the U.S. invasion of Iraq in March 2003. By happy coincidence, that war just ended after eight years and nine months, the deaths of almost 4,500 American service members, more than 100,000 Iraqi civilians and the cost of more than $800 billion in precious American tax dollars.
